Airline Industry Will (finally!) use Scanners, RFID & Software to Track Luggage

Under the category of “It’s about time!” comes a story in the Wall Street Journal’s Tech section, headlined “Airline Industry Gets Smarter With Bags.”

Perhaps stating the obvious, Catherine Mayer, a vice president at SITA, a company established by airlines and airports that processes baggage data, among other services states, “Our industry has been slow to adopt new technology, especially when it comes to passenger and baggage processing but we’re getting there.”

RFIDThe solution that makes sense, and which the airlines finally appear ready to adopt, is RFID tagging of bags. RFID, says the article, is 99% accurate versus the 15% error rate of today’s bar code solution.
